(St. Leon, Ind.) - On Saturday, May 2, a team of Dearborn County 4-H youth and East Central FFA members traveled to Lebanon, Indiana, to compete in the Indiana 4-H/FFA Poultry and Egg Career Development Event at the Boone County Fairgrounds.

The contest tested participants’ knowledge of poultry production and processing, food safety, and product quality. Youth evaluated and graded classes of past-production laying hens, market poultry products, and graded market eggs. In preparation, participants practiced making accurate observations, applying industry terminology, and explaining their decisions.

After narrowly missing honors last year, returning members set out to improve and were joined by new eager teammates. This year Dearborn County 4-H and East Central FFA youth earned several awards and honors.

In the junior 4-H/FFA division, the Dearborn County 4-H junior team of Damien Dunn, Adelaide Dunn, and Jack Rosenberger tied for 1st and, after the tie-breaker, finished 2nd out of 15 teams. Individually, Damien Dunn placed 3rd overall out of 59 junior 4-H/FFA competitors, with Adelaide Dunn close behind in 4th. Jack Rosenberger placed 7th. Gracie Weber represented East Central FFA in the junior competition and finished 22nd. Damien Dunn also earned honors as the top individual in the state for past-production evaluation.

In the senior FFA division, the East Central FFA team of Tyler Stenger, Reagan Whitehead, Alaina Schutte, and Acelynn Retzki placed 6th out of 24 teams. Individually, Tyler Stenger placed 4th overall out of 97 senior FFA competitors, and Reagan Whitehead placed 6th. Alaina Schutte and Acelynn Retzki finished 35th and 39th, respectively. Nolan McDaniel competed as an individual and placed 71st.

Tyler Stenger will be recognized at the Indiana FFA State Convention in June for his top honors.
