(Dearborn Co., Ind.) - A local retired Special Education teacher is being highlighted for the incredible amount of volunteer service in the Hoosier state.

The Dearborn County Retired Teachers Association (DCRTA) announced that its nominee, Mary Jo Sloan, has been selected for the AMBA Clock Award. Sloan will be recognized for her outstanding volunteer service in Area 10 at the Indiana Retired Teachers Association’s 2020 Representative Assembly.

Throughout the years, Sloan's volunteer services have been plentiful and varied.

After retiring, Sloan served as a member of the Dearborn County Retired Teachers Foundation. She currently works with students in the "Good News" program and volunteers at her church's many activities. Sloan is described as committed when it comes to the youth in her church and has taught Sunday School for years. She is also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma that helps local and state projects.

Additionally, Sloan coaches for TOPS, which is a program that works with members to improve their health, lose weight, and develop a lifelong new way of thinking.

Over the past year, Sloan befriended a Chinese girl and helped to improve her English.

As a retired Special Education teacher, Sloan's passion lies with being a volunteer for Special Olympics to help the children build confidence, the spirit of giving, and teamwork.

DCRTA members Marita Cizek, Jane Richie, and Cherie Rump received Honorable Mentions for their volunteer service

As a foundation as a whole, the Dearborn County Retired Teachers Association was given an Outstanding Group Project Award and recognized for outstanding achievement in Public Relations.

The 2020 Representative Assembly gave the DCRTA the Outstanding Group Project Award for their pillowcase dress initiative. For years, the retired teachers have been making these dresses and shorts to send overseas for missionary purposes. This past year, DCRTA added barrettes to their pillowcase dresses for the option of wearing them on their dress or in their hair. DCRTA member Mary Bradley initiated this addition, which became an overwhelming success.

The outstanding achievement in Public Relations was given to the group for their news releases, association newsletters, and website.

Congratulations to all the successful members that make up the Dearborn County Retired Teachers Association.
