By Mike Perleberg (Versailles, Ind.) - A suspect has been identified after counterfeit bills were passed in Ripley County. It was this past April when the Versailles Police Department began investigating the funny money in the form of fake $100 bills. Identical counterfeit bills were used at the local Marathon gas station, Shell gas station, Pizza Hut, and IGA, according to a court affidavit. Town Marshal Joe Mann identified Daniel Dale Craig as the suspect. Mann spoke with Craig on the phone, however, the suspect no-showed two interviews with the marshal. Mann interviewed a woman who was with Craig when he passed a counterfeit bill at a store in North Vernon. That led the investigation to a man from Dupont, Indiana who told police that his 12-year-old son bought $5,000 of fake money at a flea market in Hanover for $15, knowing it was not real money. The Dupont resident told Mann that Craig was living with him at the time and he caught Craig coloring the money to make it look real. Craig, 32, was charged in May with four counts of Counterfeiting (level 6 felony). A warrant for Craig’s arrest remains active.
