(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) – The Lawrenceburg High School marching band is tooting its horn after claiming a handful of awards at their final competition of the season. The Marching Tigers won first place the 2A class at the Letcher County Marching Invitational in Whitesburg, Kentucky on Saturday, October 15, says Karen Craven, president of the Lawrenceburg High School Band Boosters. Bands from Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia were competing there. Trophies won by the Tigers included First in Class Drum Major for Ian Muthiani, First in Class for Percussion, Second in Class for Color Guard, and Best Overall Score for 1A/2A Bands. Additionally, the band had the highest score of all classes for Overall General Effect. The band’s total score was just six points below the invitational’s grand champion band, 4A Pulaski County (Ky.) High School. The band directed by Darren Webb has 21 freshmen and only eight seniors, making the accomplishment all the more impressive. Webb said that his goal for this season was to build the program into a sustainable competitive ensemble. This year there has been exceptional growth in both musical skill set and maturity. Webb’s goal for next season is to move to the next level and compete in the Mid States Band Association circuit. “I’d like to go to more competitions and win against schools our size,” said sophomore percussionist Kristen Craven. “Performing well at Letcher County gave the freshmen a good taste of what winning is like. If our skill level builds from here, we can win and become better musicians.” The Lawrenceburg High School Band Boosters have been working this short season to build broader parental and community support for the Marching Tigers program. “We will continue to promote and fund-raise to help Mr. Webb and the band take it to the next level to become more competitive, as this is what modern-day high school bands are doing all over the country,” said Karen Craven.
