(Nationwide) - As travelers set out for the Labor Day weekend, AAA is predicting this holiday weekend will be among the most expensive travel periods of the year.

Travelers are facing higher gas prices, rising airfares and increased hotel costs.

According to AAA, gas prices are up about $1-$1.10 per gallon compared to last year. The current national average for a gallon of unleaded gas is $4.14.

For the first time ever, the national average in August was above $4 per gallon every day

Indiana continues to have the cheapest gas nationwide at an average of $3.44 per gallon. Kentucky ($3.84) and Ohio ($3.90) trail behind the Hoosier state but have average prices below the national rate.

Domestic airfare is up two percent year-over-year, averaging $750 roundtrip. Travelers are also paying more for accommodations. Domestic hotel bookings are up nine percent compared to last Labor Day weekend.

INRIX, a provider of transportation data and insights, expects the heaviest Labor Day traffic to occur Thursday and Friday as holiday travelers share the road with regular commuter traffic.

AAA encourages motorists to depart early, allow extra travel time, and avoid afternoon departures whenever possible.

Last year, more than 400,000 drivers needed roadside assistance during the Labor Day travel period. Common issues included dead batteries, flat tires, lockouts, and towing.
