Zombies Will Devour Lawrenceburg Oct. 11

By Mike Perleberg (Lawrenceburg, Ind.) – Downtown Lawrenceburg is going to be totally dead this October. Dead as in the undead. As in zombies staggering through the streets. Organizers of the first ever Lawrenceburg Zombie Walk received approval for their event from Lawrenceburg City Council on Monday. The idea is to bring people to downtown Lawrenceburg, dress them up in tattered clothes and gory makeup, then make a slow walk through downtown all while raising money for the United Way of Greater Cincinnati - Dearborn and Ohio Counties. “What I’m looking for is an event to bring a different person to Lawrenceburg. This will be all ages, all day,” says city employee John Johnson, the zombie-desired brains of the operation. The zombie subculture has permeated into the American mainstream over the past 10 to 15 years. AMC series The Walking Dead is frequently among the highest-rated shows on television. Little girls even ask their parents for Monster High dolls designed to look like reanimated high schoolers. “We’re looking to build on that popularity,” says Johnson, who has already put several months of thinking and planning into the event. The Lawrenceburg Zombie Walk is planned for Saturday, October 11. It will begin with an event at the Lawrenceburg Public Library, then shift to the Lawrenceburg Community Center. At 2:00 p.m., the zombies of all ages will trek down Walnut and High streets before ending at the Dearborn County Historical Society’s Vance-Tousey House for a presentation. Starting at 7:00 p.m., those zombies age 21 and older will invade Lawrenceburg Main Street’s Party in the Street at the clock tower on the Ohio River levee. “We’ll have makeup stations available in the day and during the evening. Maybe later it gets a little more gory after the kids leave,” Johnson jokes. The event already has the backing of local businesses and organizations such as Party at Trav’s Halloween Express, Krypto’s Comix, Adam’s Art & Supply, Harrison Haunts, and Pinpoint Printing.
