(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - An NBA star and his family will be teaching the games of basketball and life to youngsters in Lawrenceburg this weekend.
Luke Zeller is a Washington, Indiana native who played at the University of Notre Dame and now with the Phoenix Suns. The last name may sound familiar, because he’s the older brother of Indiana University star center Cody Zeller and fellow NBA player Tyler Zeller of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Luke is the president of DistinXion Basketball & Character Camp, a non-profit Zeller Family program, at Lawrenceburg High School Friday through Sunday.
“I had an interview when I was a freshman in high school and somebody asked me what I wanted to do when I was done playing. I said I wanted to run basketball camps and help kids out. I was about 14 then. Twelve years later it’s pretty cool to see something come to fruition,” Zeller said.
The camp is open to boys and girls in 2nd through 8th grades. It focuses not just on making better basketball players, but better young people.
“My parents (Steve and Lorri Zeller) teach the character. They go through the acronym of CHAMPIONS: Character, Honesty, Attitude, Motivation, Perseverance, I am responsible, Optimism, Network of friends, and Serve others,” said Luke.
The character lessons will come during breaks from basketball skills and drills.
Zeller said families are asked to stick around for the camp on Friday evening to help with rebounding and see what happens at the camp.
“We get after it. It’s a lot of fun,” he said.
DistinXion Basketball & Character Camp registration costs $150 for the first child then $75 for each additional sibling. Registration information can be found at www.DistinXtion.org.
