(Undated) – A recent study ranks Indiana as having the worst early education system in America.

To help parents find the states with the best early education systems, WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 12 key metrics.

Those metrics included the share of school districts that offer a state pre-K program, number of pre-K quality benchmarks met and total reported spending per child enrolled in pre-K.

Indiana ranked dead last with a total score of 22.27. The Hoosier state ranked 51st for access to pre-K, 30th for quality, and 41st for resources and economic support.

According to the report, Indiana ranks in the bottom five states for the lowest share of three and four-year-olds enrolled in pre-K, pre-K special education and Head Start. The state also ranks in the bottom five for total reported spending per child enrolled in preschool.

Ohio ranks 35th overall, while Kentucky checked in at 21st on the list. Other neighboring states such as Illinois and Michigan ranked high for their early education at 16th and 12th overall, respectively.
