By Travis Thayer (Versailles, Ind.) – Horseback riders can now trot into Versailles State Park for an overnight stay. The campground announced Monday that they now offer nine primitive campsites for riders and their horses. Each site at the new horseman’s campground includes a hitching post, picnic table and fire ring. Campers also have access to a port-o-john, and potable water can be retrieved from a centrally located hydrant. The horseman’s camp site is just one of several improvements the campground plans to make. Further developments include 50-amp service and water hook-up at each site, along with manure bins and a centrally located vault toilet. Campers are asked to register at the park for equestrian campsites on a first-come, first-served basis. No advanced reservations are being taken at this time. Equestrian campsites cost $13 per night. Versailles State Park is the second largest state park in Indiana at 5,988 acres, and offers 25 miles of bridle trails. For more information, visit www.stateparks.IN.gov.
