Update published Wednesday, November 8 at 8:44 a.m.: A Walton truck driver died after shooting a fellow driver, then turning the gun on himself at a Boone County truck stop Tuesday. Boone County Sheriff’s investigators say a road rage incident in the lot of the Flying J truck stop on Richwood Road may have led to the shooting at around 9:30 a.m. Police say surveillance video at the truck stop shows the shooting victim, Ronald Melvin, Jr., 44, of Morrow, Ohio, driving a semi-truck, pull up to one of a long line of fuel pumps and as he gets out of his truck another semi driven by Jeffrey Maggard, 60, of Walton, pulls up slightly ahead of the victim’s truck two spaces down. Melvin walks to the front of his truck and then over toward the other truck. Within seconds the victim runs for cover, presumably after being shot by Maggard. “On-scene witnesses heard words between the two men and then shots rang out,” according to the sheriff’s office. After shooting Melvin, police believe Maggard turned the gun on himself and committed suicide. Melvin was transported to University of Cincinnati Medical Center to be treated for a gunshot wound to his arm.
