UPDATE: Two Drivers Seriously Hurt In SR 56 Head-On Crash

Update published at 2:15 p.m.:

Two men were flown to the hospital after a serious head-on collision on State Road 56 between Aurora and Rising Sun Wednesday morning.

Dearborn County Sheriff's deputy Craig Elliott says the wreck occurred just before 10:00 a.m. when a green pickup truck driven by Timothy Steelman, 68, of Bennington, was heading northbound on S.R. 56. Bennington's truck went off the highway. He then overcorrected and drove into the southbound lane where it struck head-on a tan pickup truck driven by Roger Gifford, 44, of Rising Sun.

Both drivers were flown to University of Cincinnati Medical Center. Their conditions were not known, Elliott said. 

Deputies do not believe alcohol or drugs were factors in the accident.

The sheriff's department was assisted at the scene by Aurora Police Department, Aurora Emergency Rescue, Rising Sun Fire Department, and Rising Sun EMS.

S.R. 56 was closed for about 90 minutes following the crash.

Dearborn County Dispatch says State Road 56 has re-opened in both directions.

(Dearborn County, Ind.) - State Road 56 is closed following a serious crash. 

A multi-vehicle accident was reported on State Road 56 between Aurora and Rising Sun around 10:00 a.m. The road has since been shut down in both directions. 

Dearborn County Dispatch says Air Care has been called to the scene, along with three ambulances. 

It is unknown how many people may be injured at this time.

Motorists should avoid State Road 56 until further notice.
