By Mike Perleberg (Indianapolis, Ind.) – Fewer Indiana third graders passed the state’s IREAD-3 test in 2016 than the year before. This year’s 83.8 percent preliminary statewide pass rate was revealed Friday by the Indiana Department of Education. That’s down from 2015’s preliminary rate of 84.2 percent. The IREAD-3, an acronym for Indiana Reading Evaluation And Determination assessment, measures foundational reading standards through the third grade. It was introduced in 2012. The pass rate at private schools statewide was 92.4 percent. At public schools, the pass rate was 83.1 percent. School and corporation-level IREAD-3 results won’t be released until a summer retesting period is completed. Any students who don’t pass the test are given remediation and a second opportunity over the summer to retake it.
