(Bright, Ind.) – Dearborn County Council has approved the county’s portion of funding for a study into creating a new connector road from Bright to Interstate 74. Council members voted 6-1 on March 17 to okay using money from the county’s MVHA fund. Dennis Kraus, Sr. was the only councilman to vote against it over concerns that the county could even afford a project of that magnitude. The study will cost $200,000. Dearborn County is now kicking in $40,000 while the remaining $160,000 will come from the Indiana Department of Transportation. The Bright-to-I-74 connector road project is identified in the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Regional Council of Governments’ 2040 Transportation plan. The road would improve Bright residents’ access to the interstate by paving a new road from near the intersection of Stateline and North Dearborn roads to near the I-74 exit 169 in West Harrison. Dearborn County Commissioner Kevin Lynch previously told Eagle 99.3 that roads like Jamison Road and White’s Hill Road – the current main routes to I-74 from Bright – were not intended to handle the amount of traffic they do today. Emergency services coverage in West Harrison would also be improved, Lynch said. An estimated price tag on the road project is $54.6 million. Eighty percent of funding would come from state and federal funds, leaving Dearborn County to come up with about $11 million. That’s if the project ever becomes a reality, which would likely be years from now. RELATED STORIES: OKI Plan Recommends Bright-To-I-74 Connector Road
