Former County Auditor Gets Probation For Theft From Kiwanis Club

(Brookville, Ind.) - Franklin County’s former county auditor will be on probation after pleading guilty to taking money from the Brookville Kiwanis Club. Stephen R. Brack pleaded guilty Monday to Theft (class D felony) and Theft (level 6 felony) in Fayette County Court, The Connersville News-Examiner reports. His case had been moved to a court outside of Franklin County because of his former standing as a public official there. Ripley County Prosecutor Ric Hertel was appointed as the special prosecutor on the case. Brack, 67, was sentenced to two years on probation. He must also repay $888 stolen from the Brookville Kiwanis Club. Brack was treasurer of the service organization when he allegedly wrote checks from the organization’s account to himself. Sue Prifogle, past president of the Brookville Kiwanis Club, read a statement at the plea and sentencing hearing. “Your honor, the members of the Brookville Kiwanis are happy to have this matter finally resolved. With these funds recovered, we will continue our efforts to benefit children locally and around the world. We will ensure that our club officers are held to the highest standards, so that the irresponsible, selfish acts of one officer may never again harm the goals, principles and integrity of Kiwanis,” said Prifogle. Brack was also ordered to have no further contact with the club or its members, the newspaper reported. Another theft case against Brack is still awaiting a resolution in Union County court. He is charged with two counts of Theft (class D felony) and two counts of Theft (level 6 felony) for allegedly stealing more than $5,000 from the Whitcomb United Methodist Church, where he previously served as a trustee. Brack served as Franklin County Auditor from 2013 until his resignation following the Kiwanis accusations in December 2016.
