(Greensburg, Ind.) - Twelve-year-old Devin Parsons was beaten for hours until he died for hiding illegal prescription pills from his mother and her boyfriend.
Now, both of the people responsible for the Greensburg boy’s death have been sentenced.
Waldo L. Jones, Jr., 31, was given a 60 year prison sentence in Decatur County court for the June 3, 2011 fatal beating, the Greensburg Daily News reports. Jones avoided a possible life sentence by pleading guilty to Murder earlier this year.
During the sentencing hearing Jones told a crowded courtroom he felt remorse for not stopping Devin’s mother, Tasha Parsons, from beating her son to death.
“I just want to express how bad I feel about what happened that day,” he said. “I can’t change what happened. I am ready to pay my debt. I am sorry. That’s all I can say.”
Tasha Parsons is already serving a 60-year sentence of her own. She had also pleaded guilty to murder under an agreement similar to Jones’.
Detectives said Devin was beaten and tortured for more than 12 straight hours for hiding the batch of pills his mother was addicted to. An autopsy revealed injuries over 90 percent of his body, including a broken arm, leg, ribs and cigarette burns on his face.
Relatives of Devin said the sentencing of both the people responsible for his death serves as closure.
“I think the family will be more at peace with the result,” said Randy Parsons, Devin’s great uncle. “What they got is better than having them walking the streets.”
A vigil was held at Parson’s grave following the sentencing.
