(Batesville, Ind.) - A longtime southeast Indiana high school football coach is calling it a career. Eric Heppner has been the head football coach at Batesville High School for 20 years. His tenure was the longest of any coach in the Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference this past season. On Monday afternoon, Heppner met with players who are expected to return for the Batesville team in 2016. He told them he is retiring. “Coach Hep” went 148-83 in 20 seasons at the helm of the Bulldogs. He guided the team to eight sectional titles, including one this past season as Batesville finished the year 11-2. Batesville High School athletic director Bryan Helvie said Heppner will continue to teach at Batesville High School. The search for a new head football coach will begin soon, but a timeline has not been established at this point, he said. Helvie credited Heppner with creating and managing the weightlifting program at Batesville, which has benefitted all of the school corporation’s successful sports programs.
