Another section of the old Milton-Madison Bridge came down in a controlled explosive demolition Thursday morning.

The span of the bridge closer to the Kentucky side came down a little after 9:00 a.m.

The new Milton-Madison Bridge was closed to traffic during the demolition, but reopened to traffic at about 10:30.

Project engineers say the remainder of the 2,427-foot-long bridge will be demolished in two blasts over the next several weeks. Afterwards, the new bridge span will be slid from temporary piers onto the old, rehabilitated bridge piers.

(Madison, Ind.) - Another blast will bring down a second portion of the old Milton-Madison Bridge Thursday morning.

The explosive demolition of a 550-foot section of the bridge near the Kentucky side of the Ohio River is slated for about 9:00 a.m. That’s if the weather such as morning fog on the river permits.

The blast follows the demolition of the bridge’s 700-foot main span on July 23. The public can watch Thursday’s demolition from a 1,000 safety perimeter on either side of the river.

The new bridge and surrounding roads will be closed to traffic during the demolition. The roads are expected to reopen to traffic at or before 11:00 a.m. River traffic will be closed starting at approximately 9:00 a.m. and will also reopen at or before 11:00 a.m.

Pieces of the bridge will fall into the river below during the blast. Pieces of the truss will be retrieved from the water, placed on barges, taken to the shore for further dismantling and eventually sold for scrap.
