(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) – Lauren Hill – arguably the most courageous and inspirational person to hail from southeast Indiana – has died. Local 12 reported Friday morning that Hill died. She was 19. The Lawrenceburg High School graduate, Mount St. Joseph University student, and basketball player for both schools was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in the form of diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) in 2012. She lived months longer than doctors had originally anticipated due to the aggressive cancer. Hill didn’t quit living her life to the fullest after the diagnosis. She became committed to serving as the voice for children whose lives were cut short by DIPG. “Anybody can get brain cancer, but you just don’t think about on a day-to-day basis unless it involves them and it touches their lives. That’s the importance of getting this story out so I can touch lives with this story and make people know that it’s real and happening to others,” Hill said during an interview with Eagle 99.3’s Bubba Bo last October.. She also made national headlines by pushing through the physical effects of the brain tumor to make her NCAA basketball debut with the MSJU Lions on November 2, 2014. In a game that was covered and broadcasted nationally, Hill scored four points. Lauren vowed to find a cure not just for DIPG, but perhaps a home run cure for all cancers. Her efforts have helped raise $1.49 million for the Lauren Hill Tribute Fund for The Cure Starts Now Foundation. Just weeks ago, Hill and the foundation announced a new goal of $2.2 million – reflecting her basketball jersey number, 22. “This has been my dream since way back in January (2014) to raise awareness. That’s all I’ve wanted to do,” Hill said previously. She realized that dream. Her amazing story touched millions. Funeral services for Hill have not been announced. Lawrenceburg Community Schools will be prepared to assist staff and students with counseling and make grief counselors available, says superintendent Karl Galey. She asked me to tell her story so others wouldn't suffer. She became one of my closest friends. Goodbye.
