(Batesville, Ind.) - Batesville High School, Milan High School, and Oldenburg Academy varsity football teams raised $26,000 to Turnover Hunger among Ripley County’s elementary school children.

Turnover Hunger is an initiative of the Ripley County Community Foundation that supports football teams in their efforts to give back to their communities. The 2021 football season was dedicated to raising funds to support the Weekend Backsack Program. The Weekend Backsack Program sends a backpack of nonperishable, kid friendly food home with elementary school students on the weekends.

According to Gleaner’s Food Bank, 1,665 children in Ripley County are experiencing food insecurity, which is approximately 6% of the population. “The Ripley County Community Foundation (RCCF) is proud of these student athletes for having the foresight to use a game to improve the lives of individuals who cannot help themselves,” stated Amy Streator, RCCF Executive Director. Streator further noted, “RCCF is thankful that these football players allowed us to be a part of this program.”

On December 10th, the football teams came together to jointly present $5,200 to each of the following schools, Batesville Primary School, Jac-Cen-Del Elementary School, Milan Elementary School, South Ripley Elementary School, and Sunman Elementary School. This funding will support the Weekend Backsack Program for one semester.
