By Travis Thayer (Milan, Ind.) - The Milan ’54 Hoosiers Museum has received a grant that will allow for the rehabilitation of the museum’s Nichols Barbershop. Milan 54, Inc. announced Sunday that they were awarded a $5,000 grant from the Ripley County Community Foundation’s Sally Morris Community Impact Grant. The money will be used to restore the adjacent barbershop to a fully operational and historically accurate 1950’s barbershop that will be decorated with memorabilia from Milan’s 1954 Championship run and from the movie “Hoosiers.” “We are very grateful to the Ripley County Community Foundation for providing this opportunity to restore the Nichols Barbershop” said Marianne Wiggers President of Milan 54, Inc. “Barbershops were such an important part of the fabric of community life in small town Indiana in the 1950’s. The restored Nichols Barbershop will provide our visitors with a truly unique one of a kind experience surrounded by memorabilia from Milan’s 1954 Boys Basketball Championship season and from the movie Hoosiers. With this grant and the match, we are getting very close to acquiring all the required funds to complete this project.” The grant required a one to one match of new money to the museum from outside donors which in total brought $10,000 in new funds toward the project.
