(Milan, IN) - For the first time in school history, Milan High School has the top rusher in Indiana high school football.
In the Indians' final regular season game on Friday against Triton Central - a 28-3 victory - senior tailback Travis Pennington netted 251 yards on the ground along with two touchdowns, three PAT kicks, and two field goals (39 and 27 yards).
The performance put Pennington's season total for rushing at 2,147 yards, by far the most of any player in the state this year during the regular season.
Warren Central's star player Shakir Bell was the next closest player. He ran for 1,659 yards through the season's first eight games.
Pennington also leads the entire nation in rushing at the moment. Through nine games, the Milan player has the nation's most rush yards according to the website www.maxpreps.com. Behind Pennington with only eight games played and 2,065 yards is Nick Zaleski from Owendale-Gagetown High School in Owendale, Mich.
A three-year starter on the Milan squad, Pennington capped his senior season with 25 touchdowns (24 on the ground, one by a catch). Throughout his career, Pennington has set school records for career rushing, single-game rushing, and single-season rushing.
Milan (7-2) enters postseason Class 1A sectional play on Friday night at home against South Decatur (4-5).
