(Lawrenceburg, IN) - This Election Day is a big one for southeast Indiana, even though not many Hoosiers will be casting a ballot.
In Ohio, voters will decide on Issue 3, which would allow four casinos to be built in Ohio, including one in downtown Cincinnati.
A recent study by the Indiana Legislative Services Agency, a nonpartisan group, says if casinos come to Ohio, it could hurt the three southeast Indiana riverboat casinos to the tune of $260 million in wagering revenue each year and a decrease in attendance of 38 percent.
Ohio voters in the Southwest Local School District will pick from four candidates to fill two seats. Running are incumbents Matthew Callahan and Walter Shrunk as well as challengers Brian Compton and Kim Downey.
Residents of the City of Harrison have the opportunity to re-make the city council as six candidates try to fill four positions. The candidates are incumbents Deborah Acra (R), Tony Burkhart (R), William Neyer (R), and Randy Shank (R); challengers are Gerald Branditz (I) and Mary Roehm (I).
Polling places in Ohio will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Only a handful of voters in southeast Indiana will even have the opportunity to cast a ballot. That is in the Batesville Community Schools district where a $28 million capital improvements project referendum will be decided.
If it passes, a homeowner in the school district with a $150,000 house would be paying about $149 more in property taxes each year. Rental and commercial property owners would be paying an additional $343.35 a year in property taxes. Agricultural land would pay an additional $2.75 per acre assessed at $1,200. The numbers were crunched by the accounting firm HJ Umbaugh and published on the capital improvements website at http://www.fanninghowey.com/batesville/tax.html.
