Dearborn County Sheriff's Office

Christy Shackelford-Grammer, 32, is charged with Failure to Stop after an Accident Resulting in Death. If convicted of the felony she faces two to eight years in prison.

Shackelford-Grammer has a pretrial hearing in Dearborn Superior Court I at 10:15 a.m. She previously pleaded not guilty to the charge after her arrest.

The Sunman mother told police she did not realize that she may have hit and killed three-year-old Jack Carpenter on North Dearborn Road in Bright last September 7. She claimed she was distracted and thought she had hit a deer as she drove away.

Jack Carpenter was playing in the front yard with his sister when he wandered out onto the road. His mother, Beth Carpenter, witnessed the deadly impact.

Shackelford-Grammer contacted police after reading news reports of the deadly accident later that night.
