(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - A total of 129 pumpkins were entered into two decorating contests sponsored by Dearborn County Hospital’s Physical Therapy Department.  Contests were held at the hospital in Lawrenceburg and at DCH Harrison Physical Therapy in the DCH Harrison Outpatient Diagnostic Center.  The contests are in recognition of October being National Physical Therapy Month and National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Dearborn County Hospital donated $10 to the American Cancer Society for each pumpkin entered in the contests.  This year, DCH contributed a total of $1,290 to the ACS for the competitions.  This brings the combined total of donations to more than $12,290 since the pumpkin contest was initiated in 2002.

“We thank everyone who took the time to decorate and bring pumpkins to the contests,” stated Ed Brush, MSPT/ATC, DCH Physical Therapy Director.  “It’s amazing the effort and creativity these individuals put into their entries.”

The winners in each age group for each location received a plaque from the DCH Physical Therapy Department.  The top pumpkins in the contest at Dearborn County Hospital were:

  • Second grade and younger:  A penguin, by Missy Weismiller’s second grade class at St. Lawrence School;

  • Third through sixth grade:  An owl, by Mindy Frye’s sixth grade class at St. Lawrence School;

  • Seventh grade through adult:  A baker making a pumpkin pie, by the DCH Administration Department.

“We appreciate all the pumpkins that were entered at the Harrison office,” added Ben Huber, MPT, DCH Physical Therapist.  “Each year we look forward to this opportunity to help the ACS while having lots of fun.  We are grateful for the support of the Harrison community in this annual event.”

“Holding pumpkin decorating contests to raise money for the American Cancer Society is a wonderful idea.  The ACS is grateful for the monetary donations provided by the hospital and for the facility’s willingness to work with our organization in raising cancer awareness and the importance of early detection,” explained Terri Jones, Community Development Director of the American Cancer Society Southeast Indiana Division.
