Other motorists made 911 calls reporting a possibly impaired driver heading westbound on the loop near the Hebron exit.
According to Boone County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Tom Scheben, a deputy attempted to stop the vehicle, but it continued across the Carroll Cropper Bridge into Indiana, eventually turning around and driving back into Kentucky.
Police then deployed stop sticks near the Petersburg exit which the fleeing vehicle hit. The driver then began heading westbound in the eastbound lanes, eventually colliding head-on with a Boone County Sheriff’s cruiser.
The driver was Vickie Santana, 34, of Austin, Texas. Deputies say two of Santana’s children – ages two and eight - were in the car during the pursuit.
Santana and the children were all treated for minor injuries at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Florence.
The mother has been charged with Reckless driving, Fleeing 1st degree, Wanton Endangerment (5 counts), Assault 3rd degree (2 counts), DUI, Endangering the welfare of a minor (2 counts).
The children are now in the care of Social Services said Scheben.
