(Versailles, Ind.) – Time seemingly stood still.
The streets of Versailles were lined full of people yet quiet as a fallen marine was laid to rest Thursday.
Marine Cpl. John Bishop died Sept. 8 during combat in Afghanistan.
Bishop’s American flag-draped casket was guarded by fellow marines and drawn by a horse as it rode through Versailles on its way to the Cliff Hill Cemetery.
Hundreds of Versailles residents looked on as the casket passed. Others waved American flags.
Bishop, a former South Ripley High School student, is the third soldier from Ripley County to die in the middle east following the September 11th terrorist attacks.
The 25-year-old died during his third tour of duty to the region, having served twice previously in Iraq.
Wife Cristle – just weeks away from giving birth to their first child together – was joined at the funeral by Bishop’s four-year-old son K-Sean, his mother Sarah Thomas, and other family members who still live in Ripley County.
