Marine Corporal John C. Bishop died last week while fighting in Afghanistan’s Helmland Province. He was shot in the chest during combat operations Wednesday, Sept. 8.

The husband and father-to-be, already with a four-year-old son, would have turned 26-years-old in October.

Bishop attended South Ripley High School for three years and joined the military after graduating from Southwest Shelby High School in Shelbyville.

A flag-draped casket will be the focus of the visitation running from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Versailles Baptist Church’s Family Life Center.

The funeral takes place Thursday at the church with Bishop’s final resting place being buried next to his father at the Cliff Hill Cemetery.

Memorial donations can be made to Cpl. Bishop’s children in care of Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home.

Hundreds of people lined the streets and U.S. 50 waving American flags and holding signs as Bishop’s body arrived in Versailles by motorcade on Monday.

Bishop had previously done two tours of duty in Iraq.
