(Bright, Ind.) – Dearborn County Sheriff’s detectives say the person suspected in a deadly accident on North Dearborn Road Tuesday afternoon has come forward.

Three-year-old Jack Carpenter was killed when he was hit by a pickup truck on the 2800 block of North Dearborn Road around 1:30 p.m. The child had wandered into the road when playing with his sister and mother in the front yard of a home.

The pickup continued driving away from the scene.

Detective Shane McHenry said the suspected driver contacted police Wednesday morning. No charges have been filed yet and the person has not been arrested.

“We’ll do a thorough investigation and look at all avenues,” said McHenry.

The suspect’s identity is currently being withheld.

Following the hit-and-run, police canvassed area roads but came up empty. They went to area businesses seeking surveillance footage of the roads hoping to catch a glimpse of the suspected vehicle.

Area residents began spreading word of the accident on Facebook Tuesday afternoon and evening, asking friends to spread word that police were seeking the missing truck and its driver.

Individuals with information concerning the accident are asked to call the sheriff’s office at (812) 537-3431.
