Around 3:00 a.m., Elizabeth Cripe, who lives on Calava Court in Union, was awakened by her dog barking and the sound of her garage door opening. She witnessed a man entering her neighbor’s garage and called 911.
Cripe gave dispatchers a description of the man and the car he drove away in. Boone County Deputies soon stopped David Smith, 23, of Covington, Ky.
Inside his car they found 12 purses.
Investigators say Smith would remove garage door openers from cars parked outside and use them to gain entry into attached garages. He would then enter homes and take purses.
Smith is charged with Burglary 2nd degree, Theft by Unlawful Taking, and Persistent Felony Offender 2nd degree. More charges are anticipated and police say Smith has a lengthy criminal background for burglary and theft.
Detectives are looking into similar burglaries that occurred in Hebron last week.
