Deputy Stabbed Then Shoots, Kills Man

(Williamstown, Ky.) – A deputy is recovering after perhaps taking another man’s life to save his own.

cation with a suspect Monday morning.

Monday morning at about 2:00 Grant County, Ky. Sheriff’s deputy Kevin Burke went to a home in Williamstown to serve an arrest warrant on James Edward Staton IV, of Williamstown.

 

Staton, 35, ran from the deputy. The short foot pursuit ended with Staton wielded a knife and stabbed Burke numerous times.

 

The deputy then drew his service weapon and fired at Staton, who was fatally wounded. He died at the scene.

 

Burke, a nine-year law enforcement veteran, was transported by medical helicopter to University of Cincinnati Hospital where he was treated for his injuries.

 

Kentucky State Police are investigating the stabbing and shooting.
