(Aurora, Ind.) – Former Aurora Chief of Police William “Bill” McCartney passed away Sunday, October 6.
McCartney died at Dearborn County Hospital. He was 80-years-old.
The lifelong Dearborn County resident served as the chief at the Aurora Police Department for two stints: from 1976 to 1980 and again from 1984 to 1988. He served with the police department for 20 years overall, in addition to volunteering with the Aurora Fire Department and Aurora Life Squad.
McCartney’s visitation takes place Wednesday, October 9 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Markland Funeral Home in Rising Sun. His funeral is Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Rising Sun New Cemetery.
His son, Tim McCartney, said the services will include police and fire honors. Because his father was so well known, he expects first responders from around Dearborn County will attend.
McCartney’s family is requesting that donations go to the Aurora Fire Department, Aurora Rescue Unit, or St. Jude Children's Hospital.
