(Shelby County, Ind.) - People travelling to Indianapolis on Interstate 74 had to deal with the interstate being shut down for hours Wednesday.
A van flipped in the westbound lanes in Shelby County at the 116 mile marker around 10:00 a.m. according to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
A passenger was ejected from the vehicle. That person was taken to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis by Aircare with critical injuries.
Police say neither of the victims were wearing seatbelts.
Accident investigators believe one of the van’s tires may have blown out, causing the driver to lose control. The van was owned by a Cincinnati food service company.
I-74 westbound remained closed for about four hours.
