(Versailles, Ind.) - Hundreds of thousands of dollars will be awarded at a unique birthday party in Versailles on Saturday, the Versailles Republican reports.
James H. Tyson, born September 14, 1856, was a Versailles native who went on to become a founding member of national drug store chain Walgreens. Before his death in 1941, "Uncle Him" Tyson set up the Tyson Fund through a donation of thousands of shares of Walgreens stock.
Today, that fund gives grants to various causes throughout Ripley County each year on Tyson’s birthday. Past projects to receive Tyson Fund grants include the Tyson Waterworks as well as local landmarks Tyson Temple Methodist Church and Tyson Library.
Versailles residents are able to vote on the grant applications during the party Saturday at the Tyson Library, 325 W. Tyson Street. The party starts at 7:00 PM.
