A late morning crash in southern Dearborn County sent three people to area hospitals.
Indiana State Police say that at approximately 10:00 a.m. Thursday a 1998 Chevrolet Monte Carlo driven by Edward Smith, 53, of Rising Sun, was eastbound on SR 56 near Lighthouse Marina when it drove completely left of center. A 2005 Chrysler van driven by Susan Blanton, 31, of Greendale, was westbound and swerved into the eastbound lane to try to avoid a collision but was struck head on by the Monte Carlo.
Smith then went into the ditch as the Blanton’s van spun in the roadway and overturned onto its side.
Blanton was transported to Dearborn County Hospital by Rising Sun EMS with non-life threatening injuries.
Edward Smith was transported to Dearborn County Hospital by Aurora Life Squad with non-life threatening injuries to his leg, foot, and arm.
A passenger in Smith’s vehicle, Tonya Smith, 48, of Rising Sun, was trapped in the wreckage. It took fire and rescue units approximately 30 minutes to extricate her. She was transported to Dearborn County Hospital and later transferred to University Hospital in Cincinnati for serious injuries to her arm, head, chest and legs.
Edward Smith told troopers that his car suffered some kind of steering malfunction which caused the vehicle to swerve out of control and cross the center line.
“Seat belt usage and air bags definitely reduced injuries suffered in the crash,” said Sgt. Matt Burkhardt.
The crash remains under investigation.
State police were assisted at the scene by Aurora Police Department, Dearborn County Sheriff’s Department, Rising Sun Life Squad, Lawrenceburg Life Squad, Aurora Life Squad, Aurora Fire Department, and Lawrenceburg Fire Department.
