(Burlington, Ky.) - The former Boone County Water District general manager has been sentenced for misappropriating county funds.
Phil Trzop, 62, was also the mayor of Walton. He was arrested in November for keeping cash from the sale of the water district’s scrap metal. He pleaded guilty to Abuse of Public Trust in July.
On Wednesday, a Boone County judge sentenced Trzop to 60 days in jail on work release. He will also serve five years on probation and be required to complete 120 hours of community service.
Investigators said Trzop kept about $10,000 in proceeds from water district’s sale of scrap metal. About $5,000 of that money was found buried in Trzop’s backyard following his arrest.
Trzop was arrested just ten days after he was elected as the Mayor of Walton. He was fired as the water district’s general manager shortly after the allegations arose and resigned as mayor in May. City Council member Mark Carnahan was appointed mayor later that month.
