(Vevay, Ind.) - Funeral arrangements have been announced for a father and basketball coach who died in an unusual accident Sunday.
Keith Oeffinger, 36, hit his head and later died after falling from the trunk of a moving vehicle that he tried to jump onto on Washington Street in Vevay early Sunday morning.
A second man, Joseph Getz, also jumped onto and was thrown from the accelerating vehicle. He survived the fall.
Oeffinger was a married father of three girls, according to his obituary. He and his wife, Sarah, were expecting a fourth child soon. Oeffinger was a coach for the girls 6th grade basketball team at Switzerland County Middle School, and had coached other area softball and basketball teams over the past several years.
A public visitation for Oeffinger will be held Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Haskell and Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay. His funeral will begin at 11:00 a.m. Thursday.
Oeffinger’s family is asking that memorial donations be made to the education fund for his daughters through the funeral home.
As of Tuesday morning, Vevay Police are still trying to locate the black car which was involved in Oeffinger’s death. The car is possibly a Honda Civic, officers said. Anybody with information is asked to call the Vevay Police Department at (812) 427-3636.
