(Ohio County, Ind.) - Ohio County residents pay the lowest amount in local taxes in all of Indiana.
The Indianapolis Star has broken down the totals of property and local income taxes in each of Indiana’s 92 counties. The state’s smallest geographic county also had the smallest amount in combined taxes per resident at $611.29.
Rising Sun Mayor Branden Roeder credited Ohio County officials for the low taxes and the resulting benefits.
“Hopefully that can continue to push our businesses. We’ve gotten a lot of businesses that have come into town this last year,” the mayor said, pointing to a new Dollar General store, a seaplane hanger, and various restaurants.
Ohio County’s amount was about $1,000 less than residents in the most-taxed county paid: Benton County in northwest Indiana at $1,714.35 in taxes per resident.
The Star’s report say local governments in Indiana’s 92 counties sought nearly $8 billion in income and property taxes last year. The analysis used 2012 data.
