(Greendale, Ind.) - "A Lawrenceburg man walked into a bar…"
It’s not a joke, but a crime when you leave two children waiting in the car outside. Matthew P. Sears, 36, is accused of doing that the morning of July 11.
Sears had gone into the Half Moon Saloon on Ridge Avenue in Greendale to take shots of alcohol at about 1:00 a.m., according to a court affidavit. A Greendale Police officer drove by Sears’ vehicle parked outside and noticed two children left unattended inside the car. Police later determined they had been there alone for about 15 minutes.
The children, girls ages 6 and 8, belonged to Sears’ girlfriend. He was watching them while she worked. The girls told police that Sears had been drinking the alcoholic beverage 4 Loco all day and that their mother was going to be mad at him for drinking alcohol.
As police tended to the children in the vehicle, Sears exited the bar. When police tried to speak with him, he fled by leaping off a cliff behind the bar. Police saw him tumble into a pile of scrap concrete and undergrowth before he disappeared. Officers reached Sears by phone later that night. He told officers he was hurt but would not say where he was.
Sears had an active Dearborn County arrest warrant at the time of the incident for Driving While Suspended and Failure to Stop After Damaging an Unattended Vehicle.
Law enforcement caught up with Sears on Saturday, August 17. He was arrested on a new warrant for two counts of Neglect of a Dependant (Class D felony) and a single count of Resisting Law Enforcement (Class A misdemeanor).
Sears remains held in the Dearborn County Law Enforcement Center Thursday. His bond has been set at $25,000 surety and $5,000 cash.
