(Boone County, Ky.) - The former mayor of Walton and general manager of the Boone County Water District will do jail time, but how much time could depend on his ability to pay back the money he misappropriated.
Last November, Phil Trzop was accused of Abuse of Public Trust. Investigators with the Boone County Sheriff’s Office said Trzop kept money that he received from selling the water district’s scrap metal.
Some of the money was used to give employees bonuses, but the rest was discovered in Trzop’s home.
During a court hearing Thursday, a Boone County judge said if Trzop pays $29,000 in restitution by his August 28 sentencing date, he will only have to serve 180 days in jail followed by five years on probation. If Trzop fails to pay back the full amount, he could be sentenced to up to five to ten years.
Trzop was elected Mayor of Walton just 10 days prior to his arrest. He resigned as mayor in May. Walton City Council member Mark Carnahan has since been appointed mayor.
Trzop was fired by the Boone County Water District in December.
