(Franklin County, Ind.) - A Franklin County man is being charges with animal neglect.
The Brookville American-Democrat reports that Darrell Miracle, 53, has been charged with Disposal of Animals That Have Died, Littering, and two counts of Abandonment or Neglect of a Vertebrate Animal.
Indiana Conservation Officers came to investigate when neighbors complained of smells from Miracle’s property on Sanes Creek Road in western Franklin County back in April. Neighbors also reported that some of the remaining live cows had broken through fences and were loose searching for food.
Without even stepping foot on Miracle’s property, officers allegedly saw and counted 36 dead animals. The animals included cows, goats, a donkey, and a turkey, according to the report.
Officers told Miracle about a law which requires that dead animals be dealt with within 24 hours and detailed the options available. Miracle allegedly said he was unaware of the law.
A veterinarian recommended that the surviving animals on Miracle’s farm be relocated and monitored for improvement.
The Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office filed charges against Miracle on May 22. He faces up to three years in prison if convicted.
