Boone County Sheriff's Office
(Walton, Ky.) - Walton Mayor Phil Trzop has turned in his resignation to Walton City Council.
Trzop was fired as general manager of the Boone County Water District last year after a probe indicated he allegedly sold the utility’s scrap metal and kept part of the money last year. Part of the money was paid to water district employees as a holiday bonus, however, Trzop allegedly admitted to keeping $10,000 at his home.
The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that Trzop resigned effective immediately Monday. In a resignation letter, the mayor said he has to give up the office to attend to personal issues.
Trzop was Mayor of Walton from 1994 through 2010. He was elected again in November of 2012, just days before he was charged and arrested.
Trzop has pleaded not guilty to a charge of Abuse of Public Trust. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 12. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years.
