(Patriot, Ind.) - Two children, ages 6 and 7, are accused of burning down a playground in Switzerland County.
The blaze was reported at the Patriot Town Park playground on Third Street at about 7:45 p.m. Sunday, according to the Switzerland County Sheriff Roy Leap. The Posey Township Fire Department quickly responded and got the fire under control. Firefighters then requested a deputy to assist with the investigation.
Leap said two juveniles were seen playing on the playground equipment about 45 minutes earlier. Deputies later found and spoke with the children in the presence of their parents. The kids admitted playing with a lighter and attempting to burn small amounts of “helicopters” that had fallen from trees at the park.
“At this time the parents of the juveniles have agreed to work with the Patriot Town Board and compensate them for the damage to the piece of playground equipment,” said Leap.
The fire is being investigated as accidental, the sheriff said. The incident remains under investigation by the sheriff’s department and no charges have been filed.
Nobody was hurt in the fire.
