(Rising Sun, Ind.) – A popular powerboat racing event will race down the Ohio River from its usual location this year.
For more than a decade, the A Roar of Thunder Regatta has been held at Aurora’s Lesko Park. However, with a construction project planned on State Road 56 along the riverfront park, the city has told the regatta’s organizers that it could not host the event this year.
Aurora’s perhaps temporary loss will be Rising Sun’s gain. Earlier this month, the Rising Sun City Council voted to accept the Ohio County Convention, Tourism and Visitor Commission’s request to host the regatta August 17 and 18.
“I would love to have this event in our City. It would bring needed people into our businesses and hopefully start a precedence for the event being held here in the future,” Rising Sun Mayor Branden Roeder said.
Roeder added that some funding still needs to be secured. He said a commitment has been made by the city, Ohio County Economic Development Corporation, and Rising Sun Ohio County Tourism, but those organizations are awaiting funding from Rising Star Casino, Ohio County, and others.
“Tourism has been diligently moving from entity to entity to come up with event funding to bring this exciting event to our area,” Roeder said.
