(Versailles, Ind.) - Ripley County’s sheriff says cuts made to his department by Ripley County Commissioners are making it difficult to schedule extra patrols.
There has been a recent rash of daytime home burglaries in Adams and Franklin townships. Those two townships cover much of the Sunman, Batesville, and Milan areas. Burglary locations include the 3000 and 5000 blocks of East County Road 1100 North, the 10000 block of North County Road 500 East, the 4000 block of East County Road 800 North, and the 5000 block of East County Road 700 North.
Taken in the burglaries were jewelry, flat screen TV’s, other electronics, and prescription pain medication.
There are no suspects, and detectives are working with other area law enforcement to determine if the burglaries are related.
Sheriff Tom Grills has issued a statement saying it’s difficult for his small agency to isolate extra patrols to those areas, especially when commissioners are cutting costs to the Sheriff’s Office in several ways.
“It appears to me that public safety, increased manpower, and equipment to the Sheriff’s Office is not a priority to the commissioners. The Sheriff’s Office has a large county to cover with very little manpower. We are doing the best we can,” Grills said.
With the lack of increased attention to the rural area where the burglaries occurred, Grills urges the public to be diligent in protecting their neighborhoods.
“Paying close attention to activity in your neighborhoods, hiding valuables in your homes, securing your residences the best you can, and help aid the Sheriff’s Office in capturing the responsible individuals. If you have been a victim of a crime, do not enter the home, or leave the residence immediately, so that potential valuable evidence is not destroyed,” said Grills.
If you have any information in these burglaries, contact the Ripley County Sheriff’s Office at (812) 689-5558, or 689-5555 after hours, or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org. Callers can remain anonymous.
