A study by the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission revealed dozens of pharmaceuticals and chemicals in samples taken from 20 locations between Pittsburgh, Pa. and Paducha, Ky.
Among the substances found in the water were antidepressants, veterinary hormones, and cocaine.
The Louisville Courier-Journal reports researchers called the concentrations of contaminants “extremely low.” Most cities which draw their drinking water from the river treat it first.
The ORSANCO report included only raw data with a final review to be published in early 2011.
