Press release from Sunman-Dearborn Community Schools
(St. Leon, Ind.) - Sunman-Dearborn Community Schools will receive their first annual energy savings report at its regular board meeting on April 11, 2013, from Performance Services, Inc. Highlights in the report will note energy savings of $180,334 for a one-year timeframe from January 2012 to December 2012 for East Central High School, Sunman-Dearborn Middle School, Bright Elementary School, North Dearborn Elementary School and Sunman Elementary School. Combined the schools have reduced their electric usage by 2.1 million kWh and 49,000 therms, which has resulted in a reduction 1,733 metric tons of greenhouse gas. This equates to annual emissions from 361 cars for one year. Shana Lopez, Performance Assurance Analyst with Performance Services, will present the report.
To accomplish these results, Sunman-Dearborn Community Schools implemented an energy program and renovated their facilities through the use of a guaranteed energy savings contract project. This included an evaluation of energy performance and the learning environment. "We are extremely pleased with the results of this energy savings project. Like other school corporations in Indiana, we are facing challenges in finding ways to fund our schools so it is important for us to look for ways in our own backyard to save our corporation money. This project did that, but more importantly, will continue to do so for many more years," said Dr. Jeff Hendrix, Superintendent. Tom Harris, Director of Support Services and Leon Kraus, Maintenance Supervisor, leads the facility energy management efforts at the school district.
"It's been a pleasure to work with Sunman-Dearborn Community Schools and the facilities staff. It's rewarding to work collaboratively to create a better environment for students, lower energy costs and help the environment by reducing carbon emissions. We look forward to working collaboratively with Dr. Hendrix and Mr. Kraus in order to continue to optimize savings and comfort," said Tim Thoman, President of Performance Services, an ENERGY STAR Partner.
