(Verona, Ky.) - A high speed police chase through Boone County ended with a crash that shut down Interstate 71/75 Sunday afternoon.
Boone County deputies responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle on Poole Road in Verona around 1:30. The suspect didn’t stop for police, however, and led a short, high speed chase to the northbound interstate.
“As Deputy Mike Dehner was en route to Poole Road to check out two suspicious vehicles one of them was just turning onto Verona Mudlick Road from Poole as Dehner approached. Dehner turned to stop the car and as he did the driver accelerated and then entered I-71 northbound. The driver managed to avoid stop sticks at our first attempt,” said Boone County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Tom Scheben.
A second set of stop sticks were effective in bringing an end to the chase. Soon after striking the sticks, the suspect vehicle hit a guardrail and stopped in the median.
The driver, Jeremy Hoffer, of Florence, was taken into custody without further incident.
Hoffer, 36, is charged with Speeding, Disregarding a stop sign, Reckless driving, Fleeing or evading 1st degree, Operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol/drugs, Wanton endangerment 1st degree, Possession of a controlled substance 1st degree, and Possession of a controlled substance 3rd degree.
