(Boone County, Ky.) - A Grant County man has pleaded guilty to a deadly 2011 drunk driving crash in Boone County.
Logan Ellis, 23, was driving under the influence of alcohol and marijuana on Dixie Highway in December of 2011.
Going 86 MPH after leaving a Florence bar a short time earlier, he crashed into a utility pole, fatally injuring two passengers. They were Heather Stanley, 21, and Stacy Hopkins, 43, both of Grant County.
A blood test following the crash showed Ellis’ blood alcohol level at .234, nearly three times the legal driving limit. Others at the bar had tried to persuade Stanley and Hopkins not to get in the car.
Ellis appeared in Boone Circuit Court Wednesday to plead guilty to two charges of manslaughter and single counts of driving under the influence and driving while uninsured, the Kentucky Enquirer reports. The plea will see him avoid a possible life in prison sentence as two counts of wanton murder were reduced.
Sentencing is scheduled next month and could receive 16 years in prison. According to the Enquirer, Ellis will receive credit for the one year and three months he’s already served in jail as his court case has played out. With a 16 year sentence, he could be eligible for parole after about three years.
