(Decatur County, Ind.) – Police in Decatur County were led on a chase by an unusual suspect early Friday morning.
Indiana State Police at the Versailles Post say just before 1:00 a.m. there was a dispatch out of Jennings County regarding a stolen white 1999 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. The vehicle was spotted just minutes later by a Decatur County deputy on State Road 3 near Westport.
The stolen car then began to flee, continuing north on State Road 3 at a high rate of speed. The driver eventually tried to cross Old State Road 46 into a private drive where it struck two pieces of farm machinery.
Police then determined that the stolen car was being driven by a 14-year-old male. Also inside were another 14-year-old male, two 14-year-old females, and a 15-year-old girl – all from the North Vernon area.
The 14-year-old male and 14-year-old female who were front seat passengers suffered serious head injuries. They were aircared to Methodist Hosptial in Indianapolis. All others in the vehicle were taken by ambulance to Decatur County Memorial Hospital in Greensburg with non-life threatening injuries.
The accident remains under investigation by Indiana State Police. Criminal charges regarding the vehicle theft could be filed against all five teens by police in Decatur and Jennings counties.
