(Elrod, Ind.) – A semi truck hauling the remains of dead animals overturned on a Ripley County highway Tuesday.

Ripley County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the crash on U.S. 50 east of Elrod near Farmers Retreat at about 9:10 p.m. They found the truck had ran off the highway, overturned, and lost its load.

The driver, James Stevens, 43, of Kentucky, suffered a head injury. He was taken to Margaret Mary Community Hospital by Rescue 30.

The tractor trailer was recovered by Davis Towing and secured for inspection by Indiana State Police. The crash is still under investigation.

The truck is owned by Wolfe Transport and was hauling the load of animal parts for Griffin, the same company which was responsible for the release of a load of animal remains on U.S. 50 in Ripley County last June. Residents along the highway said that episode left a horrible smell in the area for over a week.
